Overview:

Responsible for safely lifting, moving, positioning, and transporting patients using appropriate transfer techniques. Ensures patient safety during movement by selecting the safest transfer methods. Must be knowledgeable in CPR, infection control, equipment management, and customer service. Collaborates with the healthcare team to support purposeful rounding and follows all related policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Patient Transport & Transfer:

    • Safely transport patients throughout the hospital using appropriate equipment and safety precautions.

    • Transfer patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or other transfer devices; assist ambulatory patients as needed.

    • Accompany patients to vehicles and ensure safe handoff.

  • Patient Lifting & Safety:

    • Serve as an expert in the use of patient lifting and transfer equipment.

    • Collaborate with team members to lift patients safely and effectively.

    • Use all required safety devices, including gait belts, bed/stretcher brakes, and mechanical lifts.

  • Communication & Response Time:

    • Respond to all pages or dispatch requests within 10 minutes.

    • Maintain communication with the department via walkie-talkie, phone, and capacity management systems.

    • Receive and prioritize escort trips and departmental transport requests.

  • Documentation & Reporting:

    • Keep an accurate log of safe lift technician duties; submit log at end of each shift.

    • Promptly report concerns or issues to the charge nurse, nurse supervisor, or nurse manager.

  • Equipment Maintenance:

    • Clean and sanitize stretchers and wheelchairs after each use.

    • Use "Green is Clean" tape to indicate sanitized equipment.

    • Maintain supplies at cleaning stations.

  • Patient Care Assistance:

    • Assist with patient positioning, turning, lifting, and ambulation.

    • Support patient movement during dressing changes and other care activities.

    • Participate in purposeful hourly rounding with the care team.

    • Provide accurate handoff reports during shift changes.

  • Additional Duties:

    • Proactively seek additional tasks or assignments as directed by the nursing supervisor or nurse manager.

Qualifications:
  • Experience:

    • Patient care experience preferred.

    • Previous roles requiring strong communication and customer service skills highly desirable.

  • Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift over 50 pounds and push/pull over 200 pounds frequently.

    • No lifting or physical limitations.

    • Must meet all heavy functional demands without restrictions (see below for details).

    • Participation in an ongoing personal exercise program; gym membership reimbursement available (up to $240 annually).

  • Certifications & Training:

    • Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required.

    • Successful completion of:

      • Lift Team, Transport Team, and Patient Services orientation.

      • Body mechanics training through the Physical Therapy Department.

      • Re-evaluation of physical competence every 6 months or as needed per management review.

  • Skills:

    • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.

    • Effective under pressure and able to communicate clearly with patients, staff, and visitors.

    • Capable of performing routine, repetitive tasks using established procedures under supervision.

Entry: USD $16.50/Hr. Max: USD $25.58/Hr.
