The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 3 (Ketchikan Area Biologist) located in Ketchikan! What you will be doing: The Division of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) is recruiting an Area Management Biologist (Wildlife Biologist 3) for the Ketchikan Area Wildlife office. This position is located in Ketchikan and has oversight responsibility for wildlife management activities in southern Southeast Alaska, including supervision of an Assistant Area Management Biologist (Wildlife Biologist 2), a Program Technician, a Fish & Wildlife Technician 4, indirect supervision for a Wildlife Biologist 1/2 Flex research position, and short-term nonpermanent staff and volunteers as needed. Under the direct supervision of the Management Coordinator, this position is responsible for wildlife management in Game Management Units 1A and 2, Prince of Wales Island and surrounding islands. This position will be responsible for monitoring and managing wildlife populations including wolf, deer, black and brown bear, moose, mountain goat, and furbearers. The incumbent will design, budget, and implement wildlife management programs and develop recommendations and analyses for regulatory boards such as the Alaska Board of Game and Federal Subsistence Board. This position will oversee all aspects of the DWC area office operations and respond to public wildlife safety concerns.

The working conditions you can expect: Ketchikan Alaska is located in the Tongass National Forest near the Misty Fjords National Monument with breathtaking rainforest and countless outdoor opportunities. Field work includes spending extended time in a coastal temperate rainforest, flying in small aircraft, boating and handling large mammals, collecting samples, and other data. The majority of time is spent interacting with the public, responding to wildlife calls, writing reports, interpreting and evaluating regulatory proposals, and supervising staff. The Ketchikan office is located in the First Bank Financial center where ADF&G Divisions of Wildlife, Sport Fish, and Commercial Fisheries share conference and break rooms.

- Requires ability to fly in helicopter and small fixed-winged aircraft for low altitude surveys.
- Requires ability to drive boats in ocean conditions.

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Wildlife Management: having knowledge and experience with designing, planning, and implementing sound and practical programs for managing wildlife mammal populations.
- Wildlife Capture: having knowledge and experience of capturing, immobilizing, and performing physical examinations of various large mammal species.
- Biological Data Collection: having knowledge and concepts of collecting biological data via aerial and ground surveys, summarizing data and preparing technical reports.
- Wildlife Conflict Management: having knowledge and experience with addressing conflicts between humans and wildlife interactions and finding solutions.
- Oral and Written Communication: having skills and abilities to answer public inquires on complex issues and having experience explaining regulations through oral and written communication (i.e., explaining trapping/hunting regulations, processes for obtaining a hunting permit, public access, etc.).
- Presenting Information: having the experience and ability to prepare and present information to Fish and Game advisory committees, regulatory boards and public meetings.
- Supervision: having the experience and ability to assign work, set priorities, evaluate work performance, ensure staff are adequately trained and have expectations clearly communicated. This positions supervises one or more technical or professional employees.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note: "Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
